I started working in design while I was working in animation back in 1997. I moonlighted working as a sketch artist for a custom leather designer on Melrose Ave. Los Angeles, and evolved into designing and cutting his patterns for accessories, bags, pants, shirts and jackets.
So from 9am-5pm I was doing color design for cartoons and from 6pm-3am I was designing clothes for rock stars and models. At the age of 25 you could consider me stoked.
Once in that world I met a host of characters and opportunities to expand my skills and stack my bills. As usual I gravitated towards apprenticeship type positions and proved myself in the arena. And as usual I had to wear many hats. A challenge I was always up to.
Although I learned a great deal about production communication in publication and animation, the fashion and design world in general exposed me to a different level of problem solving allocation.
After all it’s about the team and how everyone progresses together.
